In May, 2002 I was asked to be guest speaker at the VietNow National Convention held in Lac du Flambeau in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, on the Ojibwe Reservation. This convention was unique in that the Ojibwe veterans took part in the entire convention!
This is the Lake of the Torches Resort & Casino where the convention was held.
I was in for a few surprises that weekend but this was my first one! My mom and I were met at the airport by Scott Morrison, the Convention Chairman and my VIP Escort, Pat Jackson. They told us the limo was parked outside waiting to take us to the convention. I thought they were kidding!
Pat kept me laughing because she was always putting her foot in her mouth!

The Lakeland High School Band opened the convention with patriotic music... but I was surprised at what came next!
An Ojibwe Color Guard in full Native dress! All of the men in the Color Guard were veterans!
